They Couldn't Decide on a Name for the Show

The creators had a lot of doubts about naming the show. While it's hard to imagine it being called anything else, there were actually many other options being considered. Insomnia Cafe was one option they came up with early on, which definitely would have set a different tone entirely. They scraped that idea for Friends Like Us once Marta Fran Kauffman and David Crane were brought on to write for the pilot episode. After that, they changed the name to Six of One , only to change it once again to Across the Hall , before finally deciding to simply call it Friends .
