Just like in life, sometimes things don't turn out quite how you expect. This was certainly the case for Monica and Joey's characters, who the writers originally had very different plans for. Instead of Monica ending up with Chandler, the original plan was for Monica and Joey to enter into a long-term romantic relationship.
